A trading plan is a written set of rules that defines which markets you trade, when you enter and exit, how much you risk on each position and how you review the results. It converts one-off decisions into a repeatable process. This guide sets out the ten steps a plan needs, plus a bonus step.

A trading plan is the blueprint for your trading activity and the place where your goals are recorded. It helps you stay on track and avoid decisions made in the moment. Building one involves several moving parts, and it takes more than a general intention to trade carefully. Below are the ten essential steps every trading plan needs, followed by a bonus step on the discipline that keeps a plan in use.

1. Do you understand the market you want to trade?

A solid understanding of the market you are going to trade is the foundation of a good trading plan. A strong knowledge base helps you filter a large volume of information and make informed decisions rather than reactive ones.

Whichever instruments you choose (forex, indices, commodities or others), there are three areas every day trader needs to cover:

Market terminology

Terminology is the first of these. In forex, price movements are measured in pips, while in futures and index markets they are measured in ticks or points. Tick sizes are set by the exchange for each contract, so a one tick move is worth a different amount in different markets, as the CME Group tick sizes course sets out. Knowing what one unit of movement is worth is what lets you size a position and set a stop.

The factors that move prices also vary by market. Forex is heavily influenced by economic reports and interest rate decisions from the home countries of the traded currency pairs, and much of that calendar is published well in advance. The US Federal Reserve holds eight regularly scheduled meetings a year, with dates listed on the FOMC meeting calendar. Commodity prices, by contrast, respond to supply and demand, which is why production decisions and inventory data move them, as the EIA oil supply analysis explains for crude. To identify the opportunities these events create, you need a clear view of what actually drives the market you have chosen.

Reading widely is a good starting point. Keep a demo account open as you work through new material, and apply what you read in practice wherever you can.

2. How do you assess current market conditions?

Assessing market conditions means identifying the signals that present a trading opportunity, and recognising the periods when there is nothing worth trading. To do that you need a method for analysing the market you have selected.

There are two main methods, fundamental and technical analysis. The difference between them is the type of data used to form a view on future price movements. Technical analysis is based on past price behaviour, while fundamental analysis studies the economic and financial factors that may affect a market in future.

Analysing markets can seem complicated at first. As with any complex subject, you can start with a basic approach and build on it as your understanding develops.

If you are new to day trading, it is often easier to begin with news events, support and resistance levels and a small number of basic chart patterns. More experienced traders draw signals from detailed economic releases and technical indicators. Whatever your level, you need to understand the analysis process you use before you start relying on it.

Whichever method you choose, or if you combine the two, neither produces a guaranteed outcome. Analysis indicates a potential price movement and helps you define an entry point. It does not tell you what will happen next.

3. Where do you enter the market?

The entry point is the price level at which you are willing to open a position. Your analysis will show that markets are sometimes primed for trading and at other times best left alone. Where a signal is strong, you can open a position at the current price. Where conditions are unclear or the available information conflicts, waiting for a better defined setup is the alternative.

There will also be times when a signal looks strong but your intended entry level is not available. In that case you can place a pending order that executes only when the price reaches the level you specified. Pending orders help you enter according to the plan rather than at whatever price happens to be showing.

4. How much should you risk on a single trade?

New traders often focus too heavily on individual losses, or refuse to close a losing position and increase their exposure in the belief that the market will turn. Experienced traders treat risk as present in every trade and fix it in advance.

That is why setting a risk level before you trade, and holding to it, is one of the most important steps in building a day trading strategy. A common convention is to express the maximum loss on any single position as a fixed percentage of account equity, in the range of 1% to 3%, with 1% used as a conservative starting point. The right figure depends on your own circumstances, your account size and your experience, and it is a decision only you can make.

The arithmetic is straightforward. On a trading account of USD 10,000, a 1% limit means a maximum loss of USD 100 on the position. That figure then determines your position size, because position size equals the amount you are prepared to risk divided by the distance from your entry to your stop loss, measured in the value of one unit of movement for that instrument. Fixing the risk first and deriving the size from it is what keeps a single trade from doing lasting damage.

Strings of wins and losses are normal. Whether you are having a good day or your view is proved wrong, neither should change the risk level you set in advance.

5. What risk and reward ratio should you aim for?

The risk and reward ratio compares what you are prepared to lose on a position with what you are aiming to gain. Once the risk is fixed, the next step is to set the reward.

A 1:3 ratio means the profit target is three times the amount risked. On a USD 10,000 account with a 1% risk limit of USD 100, that puts the target at USD 300. Traders starting out often prefer a 1:1 ratio, which sets a USD 100 target against USD 100 of risk. Neither is inherently correct, and the ratio changes what your results need to look like to break even.

The break even figures above are arithmetic, calculated on a fixed risk and a fixed target, and they exclude spreads, commissions and overnight financing. Real costs raise the win rate you need. The point of the table is not to identify a best ratio but to show that the ratio and the proportion of trades that work out are two halves of the same question.

A realistic target also depends on the instrument and the market you are trading. Expecting a 300 point move from a market whose average daily range is 100 points sets a target the market is unlikely to reach.

6. How do you protect your trading capital?

Price movements are outside your control. What you can control is the effect any one of them has on your account. Risk management tools such as stop loss and take profit orders are what hold your risk and reward levels in place once a position is open.

Every trade you place has three possible outcomes:

The market moves in your favour and the position gains
The market moves against you and the position loses
The market trades sideways, producing neither a gain nor a loss

A take profit order closes a position once your target is reached. A stop loss order closes it once your maximum loss is reached. Following the earlier example, an account of USD 10,000 running a 1:3 ratio would have a stop loss set at USD 100 of risk and a take profit at USD 300. Most platforms calculate and display these amounts for you, but you still need to understand how the levels relate to the price movement of the instrument you are trading.

The predetermined risk level matters most while a trade is running. Traders have moved stop loss orders further and further away on a losing position until the loss became severe, and have pushed take profit orders higher and higher on a winning one only to see the move reverse before the order was filled.

You will also meet the third outcome, where an instrument moves sideways for an extended period without reaching either level. Traders often close such a position manually, review the plan and wait for a better defined setup.

7. What should you write down in your trading plan?

Reviewing a plan means working through each step and checking whether what you decided earlier still holds. That is only possible if the plan is written down.

A written plan usually follows this sequence:

Review of the previous trading session
Analysis of existing trading opportunities
- Macro analysis of the current market, covering news, economic reports and other factors that affect prices
- Micro analysis of the current market, covering charts and technical indicators
A defined entry point
A defined risk per trade
Defined stop loss and take profit levels

The review in the first step needs something to review. Recording each trade as you take it is what makes the rest of the plan measurable, so for every position note:

The instrument, the date and the direction
Entry price, stop loss, take profit and position size
The signal or condition that triggered the entry
The outcome in currency terms and as a multiple of the risk taken
Whether you followed the plan, separately from whether the trade gained

That last point is the one traders skip. A profitable trade taken outside the plan is still a departure from the plan, and it tells you nothing you can repeat.

Every trading plan is different and depends on the goals of the individual trader. You may follow the sequence above or build your own, and either way the written record is what lets you review it.

8. How do you test your plan before trading live?

Working through the plan matters as much as writing it. A demo account lets you test it against live market data without risking capital.

Testing on a demo account exposes the weak points in a plan and gives you the chance to adjust them. For the test to be worth anything, each step has to be executed exactly as it would be in a live environment.

In practice that means placing trades only when the plan calls for them, respecting every stop loss and take profit level, and making adjustments only after the session has ended rather than during it.

Many beginners do not hold their demo trading to the same discipline they would apply to their own money. The same strategy then produces very different results on a live account, and because the steps were not followed consistently there is no reliable record to review afterwards.

Treating the demo phase as a rehearsal, not a game, is what prepares a plan for live trading.

9. How do you keep emotions out of your trading?

Emotional reactions are one reason traders depart from a plan they have written down. Recognising these tendencies is the first part of managing them.

When you begin a session, remove the distractions and outside pressures you can control so that you are trading with clear focus.

Experienced traders use routines to keep trading psychology from driving decisions, and lean on the structure a written plan provides. Some run a short checklist before the session. Others use brief physical exercise to clear their mind. What the routine is matters less than what it achieves, which is executing every step of the plan without deviation. Like any skill, that becomes easier with repetition.

10. What type of trader are you?

Once you have run your strategy a few times, you will notice that some trades suit you better than others. That is the point at which it is worth identifying your trading style.

Understanding how you actually trade helps you choose setups you can execute consistently. Some traders are better suited to short holding periods and frequent positions. Others work better over longer horizons with fewer trades.

There is no single route to trading successfully, but discipline and consistency are what make the other ten steps worth taking. Establishing whether an approach works takes more than one attempt and a degree of patience.

Beginners often abandon a plan at the first loss and move to another approach in the hope that it performs better. Staying consistent, studying the record of your sessions and changing the plan only on the basis of that record is what turns ten written steps into a working process.
