MetaTrader 4/ MetaTrader 5

MetaTrader 4/ MetaTrader 5

What is MT4/MT5?

Easily execute automated trades with MetaTrader 4 (MT4) or Metatrader 5 (MT5), one of the world’s most popular trading platforms. Known for its ability to run thousands of different automated trading strategies known as Expert Advisors (EAs), MT4 also allows you to optimise your EA strategy by backtesting them.

For more information on MT4 please visit MetaTrader 4

For more information on MT5 please visit MetaTrader 5

How can I download MT4/MT5?

The MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5) platforms are available for a variety of devices on mobile and computer. You can find the download links for all the platforms we offer within your ThinkPortal, Downloads section.

  • MT4 for Desktop (PC and Mac)
  • MT4 for Mobile (Android and iPhone/iPad)
  • MT4 WebTrader (Any browser)
  • MT5 for Desktop (PC)
  • MT5 for Mobile (Android and iPhone/iPad)
  • MT5 WebTrader (Any browser)

How do I get started using MT4/MT5?

To get started with MT4, you can download the platform on the MT4 page. For guidance on using MT4 please visit our Learn to Trade resources

To get started with MT5, you can download the platform and our MetaTrader 5 Quick Start guide on the MT5 Platform page

What is the difference between MT4/MT5 and ThinkTrader?

MT4 and now MT5 are popular standard platforms used by most brokers. They are highly customizable and also used by traders who prefer automated trading strategies, know as Expert Advisors or robots.

ThinkTrader is our proprietary trading platform, perfect for both new and experienced manual traders. Built with the trader in mind, it focuses on giving the user the total ability to take control of your trades as well as give you advanced tools and custom indicators that are not commonly found in MT4 and MT5. Such as cloud based alerts and our Trend Risk Scanner.

Can I have a ThinkTrader Account and MT4/MT5 Account?
Yes, you can have more than one account with ThinkMarkets. Each platform requires it's own seperate account type.

Where do the price quotes come from?
We have relationships with top-tier liquidity providers who stream live tradable prices and market depth information to the platform.

Is it possible to be logged in to several accounts at once?

Yes. Although you can’t be logged in to multiple accounts from one instance of MT4/MT5, you can install and open several instances of the program so that you can be running so that you can be logged into multiple accounts.

When installing MT4/MT5 simply change the program installation folder name to install mutliple instances of the MetaTrader.

Is it possible to access the same account from different computers?
Yes. – As long as you have the correct login details, you can log in to the platform from any computer, provided your connection settings are correct and the connection is not being blocked by a firewall or your ISP.

Where can I view my trading history?

The trading history can be seen by clicking on the “Account History” tab in the terminal (MT4) or toolbox (MT5). This is the lower part of your MT4/MT5 platform. Press CTRL-T or View menu > Terminal/Toolbox to access your Account History tab.

You can also modify the timeframe you are reporting by right-clicking on any row in your account history view and filtering your history. Once you have the account history you wish to view, simply right click on anywhere on the history again and select 'Save as report' to download it to a file.

What happens to my open positions when I log out of MT4/MT5?

Open positions won’t be closed until an existing stop-loss, take-profit or margin stop-out level is reached. Existing pending stop or limit orders will still be filled if the entry rate is met.

Please note for trailing-stop orders or Expert Advisor to run your MT4/MT5 platform must be open and you must be logged in.

Can I change the time zone on my platform?
No, unfortunately the time zone can’t be changed on the MT4 or MT5 platform.

Can I use robots on the MT4/MT5 platform?
Yes, you can run any Expert Advisors (EAs) either coded by yourself or available from third-party providers.

We don’t restrict the use of any strategies involving EAs, but please note that we do not provide support or endorse any or your or third-party EAs.

Can custom indicators be used in MT4/MT5?

Yes, you can use any custom indicators that are MQL-compatible. Please note, there may be times where a third-party indicator is not compatible with our MT4/MT5 platform – this can occur as a result of coding issues on the side of the indicator creator.

We don’t restrict the use of any custom indicators, but please note that we do not provide support or endorse any or your or third-party indicators.

Are there restrictions on the number of EAs and indicators I can run?

There’s no restriction on the number of EAs and indicators you can have running at any one time on MT4/MT5.

Please remember though, that as MT4 and MT5 are a RAM-sensitive program, overloading your platform with a large number of EAs and indicators can reduce the performance and speed of your MT4/MT5 platform. We do not support EAs in this regard.
