The JSE closed weaker last week Friday amid mixed global markets as the markets digested the higher-than-expected US jobs report. The US economy added 263k jobs in November, higher than market forecasts for a 200K increase and following an upwardly revised 284K additions in October, while the unemployment rate remained stable at 3.7%. On Friday, the Top 40 closed the day down 0.92% and the Resources 10 sector went down by 2.59%. The Financial 15 went up by 0.81%, banks increased by 1.38% after falling by more than 8% in the previous session. The Industrial 25 went down by 0.62% and lastly, the South African Listed Property index was down 0.82%. The rand last traded at R17.50 against the Dollar, R21.49 against the Pound, and R18.42 against the Euro. 

Thungela’s share price breached the R300 per share mark again last week. In the last 10 days, the share is up 16%, down 0.25% in the last 5 days and is down 6.03% in the last two days.

Brent Crude oil is trading at $85.76 a barrel and WTI Crude oil is trading at $80.28 a barrel. Gold is currently trading at $1805.37. Platinum is now trading at $1018.40 and lastly, Palladium is at $1917.31. On the oil front, OPEC+ decided to stick to their existing policy of reducing oil output by 2 million barrels a day from November through 2023. The European Union is set to ban most seaborne Russian oil imports from today, while the G7 agreed to impose a cap of $60 per barrel on Russian crude.

The S&P 500 closed the day down 0.12%, the Dow Jones closed the day up 0.1% and the Nasdaq had a 0.4% drop. The FTSE 100 was down 0.03%, the DAX was up 0.27% and CAC40 was down 0.17%. In the Asian markets, the Nikkei 225 is currently up 0.15% and the Hang Seng is currently up 3.74%.
