What does CFD stand for?

CFD stands for contract for difference. It is an agreement to exchange the difference in an asset's price between the point you open a trade and the point you close it.

You open a position in an instrument at the current price and put down margin rather than the full value. When you close, the difference between the opening and closing price is multiplied by your position size and settled in cash. If the price moved your way, the broker credits you. If it moved against you, you pay.

Do you own the asset when you trade a CFD?

No. You hold a contract that tracks the price. You get no share certificates, no voting rights and no physical delivery of commodities.

How do you close a CFD trade?

You trade the same size in the opposite direction. A buy is closed by a sell of equal size. A stop loss or take profit order does this automatically at a price level you set in advance.

What does CFD trading cost?

The spread on every trade, commission on some instruments and account types, overnight financing if you hold past the daily rollover, and a currency conversion where the instrument is denominated in a currency other than your account currency.

CFDs are leveraged, which means losses can exceed the initial deposit. Trading with a regulated broker, using stop losses and sizing positions against the account rather than the margin requirement all reduce that exposure, but none of them remove it.

Can you trade CFDs on cryptocurrencies?

Yes, where your account entity and region permit it. Crypto CFDs track the price without you holding a wallet or private keys, and they usually carry a higher margin requirement than major forex pairs because prices move more sharply.

Cash CFDs have no fixed expiry date. You can hold a position for as long as you maintain sufficient margin and accept the overnight financing cost. Futures-based CFDs do have an expiry and roll on a set schedule.

What is the main risk of holding a CFD overnight?

A gap. Markets can reopen at a price well away from where they closed, on earnings, data or news released outside trading hours. A stop loss placed inside that gap is filled at the next available price, not at the level you set.

Can beginners trade CFDs?

They can, but leverage makes early mistakes expensive. Start on a demo account, size positions against total account equity rather than the margin requirement, and use a stop loss on every trade.
