How much do you need to start trading forex?

In recent years, the forex markets have become much more accessible to the average person than once was the case. Many years ago, you had to walk into a bank and as a general rule had to have at least $1 million to get involved. Spreads at that point were also several hundred pips on average. However, with the advent of retail trading online, the barriers to entry have become much lower.

The average account size necessary to open is going to be somewhere in the neighbourhood of around $500, but there are some that are much less. It comes down to your trading goals, but if you are just starting out you are better off starting with as little money as possible, because you will have to 'pay for your education' as you learn the ropes. Remember, just because you might have $10,000 to trade, doesn’t mean that you should jump in with all of it. Using a little bit of patience and a lot of common sense, you will begin to understand that education is something that’s going to take some time.

ThinkMarkets offers the ability to open up an account with no minimum operating balance, with the ability to trade very small lot sizes. Again though, it is crucial to understand the idea of margin and how much you will need to open up any potential trading positions.
