Understanding AI Trading Assistants

What is an AI trading assistant?

An AI trading assistant is a tool that lets you operate your trading account through an AI conversation — placing orders, managing positions and reading account data in plain language. ChelseaAI is ThinkMarkets' AI trading assistant, built on the open Model Context Protocol so it works with Claude and other MCP-compatible AI assistants. ChelseaAI is a workflow interface to your account, not a trading advice service.

What can I do with an AI trading assistant?

An AI trading assistant lets you operate your trading account through conversation rather than menus. With ChelseaAI you can place market and pending orders (limit and stop), close positions in full or in part, set or modify stop loss, take profit and trailing stops, cancel pending orders, and view your balance, equity, margin, open and closed positions, prices, instrument details and historical price data. Anything you can do in the platform within the relevant permission scope, you can do through your AI assistant — except moving money.

What can't an AI trading assistant do?

An AI trading assistant operates within the permissions you grant it and within product-design limits. With ChelseaAI, you cannot deposit, withdraw, transfer or move funds through any AI assistant — that capability is never exposed. AI assistants do not provide trade recommendations, signals or investment advice through ChelseaAI. The AI does not place trades autonomously, run on a schedule, or act on rules — it acts only on your explicit instructions.

Do AI trading assistants give trading advice?

No. An AI trading assistant is a workflow interface — it executes the actions you instruct and returns factual information about your account, market data and instruments. It does not recommend trades or provide investment advice. Through ChelseaAI, AI assistants act only on your prompts; they do not generate signals or recommendations.

What is MCP and how does it work in trading?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants securely connect to external tools and data sources. In trading, MCP lets your AI assistant connect to your broker account through a permissioned, revocable integration. ChelseaAI is ThinkMarkets' MCP server — the bridge between your AI assistant and your trading account. Because MCP is an open protocol rather than a proprietary integration, the same AI assistant you use for other tasks can also operate your trading account.

What is the difference between AI trading and algo trading?

Algo trading (or expert advisors) uses pre-programmed rules to place trades automatically on your behalf. AI trading with an assistant like ChelseaAI is different: you make every decision through a conversation with your AI assistant, and the assistant executes your instructions. AI trading does not run automatically, does not trade on signals, and does not act without a prompt. It is closer to a voice-or-text interface for manual trading than to an automated trading system.

Availability and Access

Can I use an AI trading assistant on demo and live accounts?

Yes — ChelseaAI is available on both demo and live ThinkTrader accounts. Starting on a demo account lets you test the AI trading workflow without funded risk before enabling it on a live account.

Which AI assistants work with ThinkMarkets?

ThinkMarkets works with any AI assistant that supports the open Model Context Protocol (MCP), including Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and Perplexity. Because MCP is an open protocol rather than a proprietary integration, you are not tied to a single provider: you bring the assistant you already use rather than learning a new one. Each assistant has its own way of adding a connector, so availability and setup steps vary between them.

Can I use ChatGPT for trading on ThinkMarkets?

Yes. You can connect ChatGPT to your ThinkTrader account through ChelseaAI. You generate a connection configuration in the Connect MCP Client panel in ThinkTrader and add it to ChatGPT's connector settings. The same route works for other MCP-compatible assistants such as Claude and Perplexity. Whatever assistant you use, it operates only within the permissions you grant, acts only on your explicit instruction, and can never deposit, withdraw or transfer funds.

Is there a fee to use an AI trading assistant?

No. There is no additional fee from ThinkMarkets to enable or use ChelseaAI on an eligible ThinkTrader account. Some AI assistants may have their own subscription tiers — Claude offers a free tier that works with ChelseaAI.

How do I connect an AI assistant to my trading account?

You can connect in one of two ways. From inside ThinkTrader, open Account Settings, select Connect MCP Client, generate your configuration, and either select the Connect button for your AI assistant in the pop-up or copy the URL or JSON to paste into your client manually. Alternatively, start from your AI assistant — in Claude, this is done under Customize > Connectors > Add custom connector, where you paste the Remote MCP Server URL copied from the Connect MCP Client panel. In either route you choose your accounts and access type and confirm inside the AI assistant.

How long does my ChelseaAI connection stay active?

Your ChelseaAI connection remains active for seven days. It will also expire after 24 hours of inactivity. When a connection expires, you will need to reconnect from the Connect MCP Client panel in ThinkTrader. Generating a new configuration takes under two minutes.

Do I copy the URL or the JSON to connect my AI assistant?

The format you need depends on your AI assistant — some accept a URL, others require the JSON server entry. Both are produced by the Connect MCP Client panel in ThinkTrader, and a toggle in the pop-up lets you switch between them before copying. If your assistant appears in the supported list in the pop-up, you can skip this step entirely by selecting its Connect button, which handles the connection without copying anything. Refer to your assistant’s documentation if you are unsure which format it expects.

Where does the connection complete — in the trading platform or in my AI assistant?

The connection completes inside your AI assistant. After you start the connection — either from the Connect button in ThinkTrader or by adding ThinkTrader as a custom connector in your assistant — you log in (if you are not already signed in), choose which accounts to connect and select your access type, then confirm. You remain in the AI assistant on completion; the flow does not return you to the trading platform. The connection is then visible both in the AI assistant and in your ThinkTrader account settings, where it can be modified or revoked.

Permissions and Control

How many accounts can I connect to my AI assistant?

You can connect as many ThinkTrader accounts as you have. During the connection flow you select which accounts to include and set the access type for each. You can modify or revoke access per account at any time from your ThinkTrader account settings.

What permissions can I give an AI trading assistant?

ChelseaAI offers two permission scopes: read-only (the AI can see market data, instruments, your positions, balances and trading history but cannot place trades) or full access (read plus order placement, modification, cancellation and closure). You can set permissions per account and change them at any time. AI assistants never hold your account credentials.

Can AI place trades for me?

Not without your explicit instruction. Every action through ChelseaAI originates from a prompt you give in the AI conversation. The AI assistant does not place orders autonomously, does not run on a schedule, and does not act based on rules or signals — it acts only when you tell it to.

Can AI access or move my money?

No. ChelseaAI does not expose any fund movement capability — at any permission level. Deposits, withdrawals and transfers can only be made inside the trading platform under standard authentication. AI assistants cannot withdraw, deposit or transfer funds.

How do I revoke AI access to my trading account?

You can disconnect ChelseaAI at any time from your account settings. Revocation takes effect immediately — the AI assistant loses access to your account the moment you confirm. Any unfinished actions in the AI conversation will fail to execute against your account after revocation.

Capability Detail

Can an AI trading assistant set stop loss and take profit?

Yes. With ChelseaAI, stop loss, take profit and trailing stops can be set when placing an order, and modified on an existing position. Tell your AI assistant the level (or the distance from current price) and it will apply it.

Can an AI trading assistant place limit and stop orders?

Yes. Pending orders — limit and stop — can be created, modified and cancelled through your AI assistant. You can set an expiry on a pending order or leave it open until cancelled.

Can I close all positions at once with an AI assistant?

Yes. ChelseaAI supports bulk close — all open positions, or all positions on one symbol. The same applies to cancelling pending orders. Tell your AI assistant in plain language and it will execute the bulk action.

Can I change the size or direction of an open position via AI?

You can modify stop loss and take profit on an open position, and you can partially close it. Changing the direction or increasing the size of an existing position is done by closing it and opening a new one — the AI will not silently restructure positions.

Safety and Accountability

How do I see what the AI has done on my trading account?

Every action through ChelseaAI is recorded in your in-platform audit log with timestamp and full detail. The audit log is the system of record; if anything looks off in the AI conversation, reconcile against it. The audit log is independent of the AI conversation and cannot be edited by the AI.

Is AI trading safe with ChelseaAI?

Account security and asset custody remain with ThinkMarkets. ChelseaAI uses scoped, revocable permissions; AI assistants never hold your account credentials. Every action is recorded in your audit log for reconciliation. AI assistants cannot move funds, cannot place trades without your instruction, and cannot operate outside your set permissions. CFD trading itself carries risk regardless of the interface used to place trades — ChelseaAI does not change the underlying risk profile of trading on margin.

What if the AI misinterprets my instructions?

AI assistants can misinterpret prompts or summarise data incorrectly. You are responsible for reviewing actions before they are placed and for verifying account information. ChelseaAI's in-platform audit log lets you reconcile what was actually done. Starting on a demo account is recommended so you can see how your AI assistant interprets your prompts before using it on a live account.

Should I use an AI trading assistant if I am new to CFD trading?

ChelseaAI does not change whether CFD trading is appropriate for you. CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. If you are new to CFD trading, start with a demo account and review the educational material in the Help Centre before opening a live position. An AI conversation does not replace understanding the product you are trading.
